The classic car review: how often is it performed?

Despite their old age, the revision of classic cars does not present any differences compared to the more recent vehicles. It too is in fact carried out every 2 years in an authorized workshop or at the headquarters of the nearest Civil Motorization.

Classic car insurance: information and benefits

In the insurance field there are many facilities reserved for owners of vintage cars or historical interest. The only limitation concerns the contractor’s age, which cannot be less than 23 years. Find more information on the insurance for classic cars in our study “Insurance for vintage cars: procedure and costs”.

Here, then, are the main advantages for those who take out an insurance policy for classic cars:

The insurance premium on vintage cars is normally lower than the norm.

For this kind of vehicles there is no merit class based on the bonus / malus system.

The free guide is granted at no extra cost and includes all drivers aged 23 and over.

Many companies apply additional discounts to all collectors who own more than one historic car.

Unless you have a big fortune in the bank, forget the so-called ” classics ” models, which make collectors around the world dream, such as the Ferrari 250 GTO, the Maserati Transport or the Mercedes 300 SL Butterfly … These cars are today pay up to 12 million euros each! Also discard very old cars, rather perceived as museum objects that will not be valued anymore.

Concentrate on cars built between the immediate post-war and mid-1980s. We still find, in perfect condition and reasonably priced (from 10,000 to 50,000 euros), with the advantage of being able to drive, a major asset for real collectors. Cars from the 1965-1975 period are particularly popular because they remind buyers of their childhood memories. Another interesting niche: the “young timers”, more recent models of the 1980s. Their rating is still low, but it should quickly climb, as for the famous Peugeot 205 GTI, still accessible to less than 10,000 euros.

Capital gain

The scarcity and condition of the car are the main criteria for valuation.

Whether it is the Bugatti Royale, built in only 6 copies and is now worth around 40 million euros, or some Citroën DS as new, untouchable to less than 45,000 euros, the main criterion of gain for resale is the rarity of the vehicle. It is therefore advisable to favor small series, especially the first numbers, because they are better rated.

The general condition of the cars also comes into play, hence the need to maintain them carefully, both at the level of the bodywork and the mechanics (a market of the spare parts of old cars was created there is a few years). That said, always prefer cars that have been kept in their original condition, without any change of clutch, braking system and especially engine, which obviously assumes low mileage.

Auctions are generally very attractive at the price level.

You will not find the rare pearl at a classic car dealership. Instead, look for specialized garages, knowing that their expertise is sometimes limited to a single brand (Citroën, Ford, Renault …) or at a specific period, for example the 1960s. But be careful, their prices are often 10 to over. 15% to those of the market. Search also on the Internet, where sites such as or will give you a good overview of the rating. And do not forget the auctions, often very attractive at the price level. The disadvantage is that you cannot try the car: it’s just started in front of you, a sign that the engine is running.

Glossary: knowing the right terms

Vintage car: In 2008, the International Federation of Veteran Vehicles (Five) decided to adopt a new definition of “collection” vehicle, setting its minimum age at 30 years (instead of 25 years ago). The so-called collector car says advantageous taxation on capital gains, but also a rating system determining the value of the vehicle, which is estimated according to its rarity and popularity among collectors.

Classics: Name given to the most prestigious vintage cars whose sales value has exceeded one million euros. This was the case, for example, of the 1955 Mercedes 300 SL Papillon (3.5 million euros) or, better, the Ferrari 250 GT California Spider 1961, former property of Alain DeLeon, who found a buyer for the sum of … 14,2 million euros!

Collectors: A name that used to refer to beautiful collectible watches, regardless of the price at which they were sold. Today, the term “collectors” is reserved for the most expensive models on the market, such as this Patek Philippe 1957 (in pink gold), which was sold for nearly 1.6 million euros. A misery compared to this watch gusset, the same manufacturer: The Graves, whose purchase price is currently estimated at 19 million euros.

Dation in payment: It is the possibility that is given to the heirs of a collector to pay their inheritance rights by ceding to the State an object of the same value as the amount of the sums due to the tax administration. This device, very practical, however meets quite often a difficulty: to collect the agreement of the two parts on the price of the object yielded.

Reserve Price: The basic concept of auction houses, the “reserve price” is the price, determined secretly by the seller, below which the object offered for purchase will not be assigned. This arrangement allows him to protect himself against the risk of auctions that do not take off, which would then force him to sell his property at a very low price.
